Chris Froome's hopes of winning a primary Vuelta a Spain suffered a blow once he finished over 2 minutes and thirty seconds behind leader Nairo Quintana.
The Team Sky rider lost the day's breakaway, that featured Quintana, and therefore the Colombian went on to end second on the 118km stage to Formigal.
Briton Froome currently trails Quintana by 3 minutes thirty seven seconds with six stages of the three-week race left.
Gianluca Brambilla outsprinted Quintana to win stage 15's mountain-top end.
